A
stroll down Cashmere's quiet tree-lined streets evokes memories
of America's simpler, more carefree times. Churches
outnumber bars, residents use any excuse to line the downtown
with the stars and stripes, and school activities draw capacity
crowds of supporters. The downtown core offers small
shops and family-owned restaurants whose friendly owners fill
social as well as commercial needs.
History
still whispers her secrets to guests at the Chelan County
Museum and Pioneer Village. Saunter through 20 original
pioneer buildings recovered from sites in Chelan and Douglas
Counties. Witness how pioneers to the West struggled
to survive and build communities in the midst of sagebrush
through the tour
of their homes, blacksmith shop, doctor's office, school,
mission and hotel. Inside the newly renovated museum,
displays of Native American artifacts over 9,000 years old
and historical photographs depict how indigenous people lived
on the land.
Nearby,
the Chelan County Fairgrounds offers multi-use grounds and
year around facilities for family and class reunions, RV Clubs,
youth rodeos, and other self-contained groups. The site
of the annual County Fair, held the weekend after Labor Day,
the fairgrounds feature rodeo arenas, grandstands, small and
large pavilions and hook-ups, all along the shores of the
picturesque Wenatchee River.
Adventure
seekers will find thrills throughout Chelan County, but a
few of the best sit just outside of Cashmere. According
to Biking Magazine, Devil's Gulch is one of the best mountain
biking trails in the Pacific Northwest. A breathtaking
23-mile loop, the Gulch attracts skilled, experienced riders
to its single-track dirt and gravel trail. Not far away
at Peshastin Pinnacles State Park, rock climbers and repellers
sharpen their skills along sheer rock faces...rewarding their
efforts with the stunning views from the top. And Cashmere's
downtown park is a popular "takeout" point for many
of the whitewater rafters and kayakers who challenge the Wenatchee
River each year.
