Evening Magazine Films Historic Flight Story
|
Evening Magazine, a Seattle KING-5 television program will feature the almost forgotten story of the historic non-stop transpacific flight from Misawa, Japan to Wenatchee, WA. The daring duo of Clyde Pangborn and Hugh Herndon Jr. left Sabishiro Beach, Japan on the morning of October 4th, 1931. 41 hours and 15 minutes after taking off from Sabishiro Beach, Japan Pangborn and Herndon landed at Fancher Field in East Wenatchee. The two had flown non-stop almost 5,500 miles across the Pacific Ocean. Although it was a feat which equaled or exceeded the accomplishment of Charles A. Lindbergh in his 1927 Atlantic crossing (a crossing that had been made many times before), neither public acclaim nor financial success materialized for Pangborn and Herndon. The Pacific was not flown non-stop again until after World War II. The Spirit of Wenatchee is a non-profit organization of EAA Chapter 424 pilots. They have taken on the ambitious project of recreating the historic flight of Clyde Pangborn and Hugh Herndon Jr. This flight, just as it was done in 1931, will be a non-stop 5,000 plus mile Pacific crossing. The Spirit of Wenatchee group has built a working replica of the 1931 Bellanca J-300 Special, the Miss Veedol. Bringing recognition back to Pangborn and Herndon whom history has nearly forgotten has fueled the project.
