8:00 AM Depart for Japanese Garden of Friendship
8:15 AM The Japanese Garden is a joint effort between the Sister Cities of Misawa, Japan, East Wenatchee and Wenatchee. The garden symbolizes the close ties between the three cities and the events that link them. The Sister City relationship between Wenatchee, East Wenatchee and Misawa, Japan began in 1981. The historical 1931 trans-Pacific flight of the "Miss Veedol" airplane from Misawa to East Wenatchee, piloted by Clyde Pangborn and Hugh Herndon, was the common bond between the two cities.
8:45 AM Depart for Rocky Reach Dam
9:00 AM Each year the 30 acres of award-winning lawns and gardens are planted with thousands of flowers. Special features include Petunia Island, where 8,000 brilliantly colored annual flowers are planted in a new design every year. A large symbol of the Chelan County Public Utility District is composed of colorful flowers. Another display of bright red, white and blue annual flowers depicts the U.S. flag, and dozens of varieties of dahlias await the visitor. The landscaping requires so many flowers that the dam has it’s own greenhouse to grow the number of plants it needs to beautify the grounds each year.
9:30 AM Depart for Ohme Gardens
10:00 AM Just north of Wenatchee sits one of the most famous alpine gardens in America. The dry and desolate hill was transformed into 9 acres of lush alpine beauty by years of work by the Ohme family. There are winding paths throughout the garden where visitors can view calm, clear pools surrounded by beautiful flowers and alpine groundcover. Vista areas offer spectacular views of the Cascade Mountains, Columbia River and Wenatchee Valley.
11:00 AM Depart for the Riverfront Park Xeriscape Demonstration Garden
11:15 AM The garden designed and planted by the Washington State University Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners boasts over 40 varieties of low-water-use plants and grasses. The vibrant garden provides a showcase for the great variety of plants that meet the requirements of minimal water use and survive the harsh weather conditions in Chelan County. The Xeriscape garden overlooks the Columbia River in Wenatchee's Riverfront Park and is located along the Apple Capital Loop Trail near the Nile Saunders Steam Train. It can be reached by parking at the train depot then walking north on the trail, or at the foot of Fifth Street near the city ice rink and walking south on the trail.
12:00 PM Box lunches in the park
1:00 PM Depart for Saint Laurent Winery
1:30 PM Enjoy a stroll through the winery gardens and experience the beauty of their European theme landscape. Or relax under the basalt columned pavilion while trying some of Saint Laurent’s outstanding wines. Framed by the vast horizons of the Wenatchee Valley foothills and the towering Cascades the gardens overlook the mighty Columbia River and the Three Lakes area. Giant lava flows created the towering columnar basalts behind the Malaga farm, which were carved by the ancient water of Lake Missoula. The basalt fieldstone in the soils provided the humble stone that borders the winery gardens.
